Bird Poem
By Pablo Neruda
It was passed from one bird to another,
the whole gift of the day.
The day went from flute to flute,
went dressed in vegetation,
in flights which opened a tunnel
through the wind would pass
to where birds were breaking open
the dense blue air -
and there, night came in. Here the poem shifts to the narrator becoming a bird, and looking down
When I returned from so many journeys, on the Earth.
I stayed suspended and green
between sun and geography -
I saw how wings worked,
how perfumes are transmitted
by feathery telegraph, This connects the human objects with the lives of the bird, personification.
and from above I saw the path,
the springs and the roof tiles,
the fishermen at their trades,
the trousers of the foam;
I saw it all from my green sky.
I had no more alphabet
than the swallows in their courses,
the tiny, shining water On this line and on the next, the contrast between water and fire means
of the small bird on fire anger and serenity
which dances out of the pollen .

An analysis
To paraphrase, this poem is about the view the birds have from high above the ground. Then, the poem shifts and HE terns into the point of view of the bird and describes that the view is green from the point of view of a bird in flight. He describes how he saw how wings work and how he saw how perfumes are transmitted through the air. Then he ends the poem with the contrast of a metaphor comparing water and fire.
