Hope is a thing with feathers THe title is a metaphor, EMPHASIZES the symbolism of the poem
By Emily Dickinson
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul, Hope waits until it's needed.
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm Problems have to be very bad
That could abash the little bird to loose hope in a situation.
That kept so many warm.
I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity, Attitude shifts now to remorse and thankfulness.
It asked a crumb of me.
All the uses of the bird are used with personification

An Analysis
To paraphrase, this poem is about a bird that perches on the soul that keeps singing, even in hard times. And that it would take a very strong storm to stop it. In fact, the bird does not stop its song ever. The author says she had heard its song in many bad places, and it never asked anything of her.
The bird in the poem represents hope. The hope that sits on the soul, and keeps you happy throughout the day. This hope is heard most in the darkest times, when you need it most. And even though you cling to it every day, it never asks for anything in return. This supports it's theme that you can always have hope.
The storm represents the problems we have as a society in our lives. For us to loose hope, the problem has to be worse than anything we had ever had to go through before.
This can be connected to Anthem and how Equality never gave up throughout his journey. He listened to the bird.
